Looking for a carpet shop? How choosing from home samples works

We are fitters rather than a high street shop, so the shop comes to you: swatches, sample boards and a measure in the room the carpet is for.

If you have been searching for a carpet shop, the short answer is that we do not run a showroom, and you do not need one. We bring carpet swatches and hard flooring sample boards to your home at a free site visit, so you choose in your own light, next to your own furniture, and we measure the room during the same visit. After that you get a written price with no obligation. This page explains how that differs from buying in a store, what happens at the visit, and how to get the most out of the samples.

Why choosing at home beats a showroom floor

Showrooms are lit to flatter. Bright overhead spots and white walls make almost every carpet look lighter and cleaner than it will in a hallway with one small window or a bedroom that faces north. Colours shift noticeably between daylight, warm bulbs and cool LEDs, and the only place that tells you the truth is the room itself.

Scale matters too. A small swatch in a big store gives no sense of how a pattern, a twist or a loop pile reads across a whole floor. Laid on your own floor, beside the skirting, the sofa and the curtains, a sample shows you straight away whether a grey is too blue or a beige too pink.

You also avoid the usual shop problem of choosing a carpet first and discovering the practical issues later. Because the person holding the samples is the person who will measure and fit, questions about stairs, door heights, underlay and the state of the floor underneath get answered on the spot.

What happens at the free site visit

A site visit usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. We bring sample boards and carpet swatches, talk through how the room is used, and help you narrow the choice to the right range for the traffic, the room and your budget.

While we are there we measure properly, look at the subfloor and note anything that affects the job, such as doors that may need trimming or a staircase with winders. That is information a shop cannot collect without a separate measuring appointment.

Where it is useful, we drop off larger samples so you can live with them for a few days. Seeing a sample morning and evening, with the heating on and the lights off, settles most decisions quickly.

  • Samples brought to you, no showroom trip
  • Measure and floor check in the same visit
  • Larger samples left for a few days where helpful
  • Written price afterwards, no obligation

How to judge a carpet sample properly

Put the sample on the floor rather than holding it up. Carpet is seen from above and at an angle, and the pile catches light differently when it lies flat.

Check it in the darkest corner of the room as well as by the window. If you like it in both places, you will like it on the floor.

Press it with your hand and bare foot. Density matters more than pile height for how a carpet wears; a dense, tight pile springs back, while a loose, tall pile flattens in walkways.

Look at it beside your fixed items: skirting, doors, the stair banister and anything you are not replacing. A carpet that suits the paint colour you plan to change next year is not the right carpet.

Carpet and more from the same visit

Many customers start by looking for a carpet shop and end up mixing materials, for example carpet on the stairs and bedrooms with LVT or sheet vinyl in the kitchen and bathroom. Because we supply and fit carpet, LVT, laminate and vinyl, and prepare subfloors, one visit can cover the whole house, with samples of each.

Doing it this way keeps the heights and thresholds consistent between rooms, which is easy to overlook when different materials come from different places.

What it costs

The site visit and quote are free. Our published guide price for carpet is from £18 per square metre, and the written price you receive is based on the measured room, the range you choose and what the floor needs underneath. For a fuller breakdown of how carpet is priced, see our carpet cost guide.
