Floor screed cost depends on what the base needs before the new covering can be laid. Depth, existing adhesive, moisture condition and the area to be levelled all affect the work. This guide concerns self-levelling preparation for floor coverings, as part of our screeding service, rather than a generic structural slab or a price for every kind of screed.

Define the work before comparing the price
The term floor screed is used for different building tasks. We apply self-levelling compound over a prepared base so LVT, vinyl or laminate can sit on a flat, sound surface. A quote for that work needs to identify the actual preparation, rather than being compared with an unrelated structural floor project because both use the same broad name.
Tell the fitter which covering will follow the levelling and what is on the floor now. A thin glue-down finish has different surface demands from carpet over underlay. Knowing the intended material helps establish the preparation specification, so the price relates to a suitable finished base rather than an isolated layer with no floor covering in mind.
Depth matters as well as floor area
A light smoothing layer over a relatively even floor is different from filling a substantial dip. Deeper fills increase the work and take longer to become ready. Measuring the room alone does not describe that difference, which is why an area-only estimate cannot settle the quotation.
The straightedge check looks at flatness in more than one direction. Low spots, ridges and patched areas can require different attention even within the same room. The aim is a suitable plane for the new finish, not an assumption that every square metre needs the same treatment. Inspection gives the quantity and preparation conversation a real basis.
Floor screeding and levelling
- Moisture readings are taken before any compound or impermeable floor covering goes down.
- A levelling compound fills those low spots and gives the floor one flat plane.
The existing surface can change the work
Old adhesive and the covering being removed affect preparation before compound is applied. Adhesive removal, smoothing and levelling are separate parts of commercial and domestic preparation. A concrete floor revealed after carpet uplift may be quite different from a base with stubborn remnants of a bonded covering.
Clarify who is lifting the old flooring and disposing of it. If a quote leaves that task unclear, the apparent saving does not tell you whether the same job is included. Ask what condition the base is expected to be in before levelling starts, and compare that with the work described in the competing specification.
Moisture readings are not optional budget detail
Our screeding service takes moisture readings before compound or an impermeable covering goes down. LVT and vinyl require a suitable dry base as well as a smooth one. If moisture is present, the issue has to be assessed before fitting; making the surface look level does not remove the underlying condition.
Do not select a compound or assume a drying timetable simply from an online calculator. The product and base condition belong in the survey and installation guidance. If the floor is not ready for a covering, that affects the sequence of work. The quote should follow the condition found rather than promise a universal route from pouring to fitting.
Include the doorway and adjoining finishes
Preparation can change the finished floor height. That matters at doors and where one room meets a different covering. A levelling decision made without considering those edges may leave the threshold detail unresolved. Discuss the intended finish and the neighbouring floors while the base is being assessed.
We include trims and threshold planning within installation. These details are why a useful quote describes the whole transition from the existing base to the new surface. If the project spans several rooms, explain which floors remain so the levelling specification is considered against the actual route through the home.
Use a cost calculator as an enquiry aid
An approximate area helps describe the project, but it cannot measure dips, identify old adhesive or take a moisture reading. It also does not decide whether concrete levelling or timber preparation is the appropriate task. Different units on an online price do not overcome those missing details; the work first needs a clear specification.
Use our floor screeding page to arrange a free site visit and a written quote. Explain the new floor you want, the old surface and any unevenness you have noticed. The subfloor preparation service covers plywood overlays as well as levelling, while the preparation-cost guide explains the wider budget context. The next step is assessment of the actual base, not an invented fixed screed rate.

Frequently asked questions
What most affects self-levelling floor screed cost?
The floor area, depth needed, existing surface and moisture condition affect the preparation. A thin smoothing layer and a deeper fill are different tasks, even in rooms with similar dimensions.
Does a screed calculator give a complete flooring quote?
No. Area alone does not inspect old adhesive, floor flatness or moisture. The levelling product and the covering that follows it need to be specified for the surveyed base.
Is this guide about a new structural floor slab?
It explains self-levelling preparation before floor coverings, matching our screeding service. Structural floor work is a different scope and should not be priced from a floor-covering preparation description.
Should I compare screeding separately from the new floor?
Ask for the preparation to be clear in the written quote, while considering the intended covering, height and thresholds together. That shows what work has been allowed for without losing the complete installation context.
