LVT vs vinyl is not a choice between vinyl and a completely different material. Luxury vinyl tile belongs to the vinyl family. The useful distinction is between individual luxury vinyl planks or tiles and a continuous sheet, often with a cushioned backing. Product names can blur that distinction when both samples show a wood effect. This guide helps you identify what is being quoted; our separate sheet vinyl comparison covers the room-by-room choice.

LVT names a product family, not only a square tile
The letters stand for luxury vinyl tile, but the format can be a long plank as well as a tile-shaped piece. Wood-effect LVT is commonly presented as planks, while stone effects can use a tile format. Calling a sample vinyl does not tell you which of those formats you are looking at, or how the finished pieces will meet.
When comparing descriptions, ask for the actual range and format. A wood-look sample is an appearance choice, not an installation specification. The quote should make clear whether the floor consists of individually laid pieces or a sheet cut from a roll. That detail is more informative than deciding that every product labelled luxury is automatically the right one.
Sheet vinyl and cushioned vinyl describe different details
Sheet describes the format: a continuous covering cut to fit the room. Cushioned describes the backing and feel. A cushioned sheet can feel softer underfoot than glue-down LVT, but cushioning does not turn it into an underlay system for individual planks. We template sheets around awkward room shapes and bathroom fittings.
A printed plank pattern on a sheet is still a sheet. It can look like boards without being installed board by board. This matters when reading a photograph or a short product listing: the visible wood lines may be part of the print rather than joints between separate pieces. Compare the sample and the product description together before ordering.

Plank format does not settle the fixing method
Glue-down LVT is bonded to a prepared surface. Click LVT uses connecting pieces in a floating construction, as explained in our plank guide. Those methods should not be bundled into one vague vinyl fitting description. The selected product determines its installation requirements, including whether an appropriate underlay is used or the floor bonds directly to the base.
For glue-down fitting, a flat and dry base is central to the result. On timber, preparation may involve a plywood overlay; on concrete, smoothing or levelling may be needed after inspection. A plank that looks substantial in your hand does not make an uneven base suitable. Ask how the named product will be installed in your actual room.
Separate surface protection from total thickness
LVT descriptions often include both total thickness and wear-layer thickness. The protective layer is a different measurement from the complete plank. Our wear-layer guide explains why the room and traffic matter when choosing the specification. A thicker-looking sample alone is not enough to compare two products with different constructions.
Cushioning in a sheet likewise tells you about feel, not that it has the same wear specification as another covering. Compare the manufacturer’s stated use and care for the actual range. If a listing only gives a colour and a broad vinyl label, obtain the product details before deciding that it is equivalent to the sample in another quotation.
Which comparison should you use next?
If you have established that one option is cushioned sheet and the other is LVT, the sheet vinyl versus LVT guide compares comfort, water, cost and repairability by room. If both options are planks, use the plank and wear-layer guides to compare their specifications instead. That avoids reading a sheet-versus-plank answer into a choice between two plank ranges.

Frequently asked questions
Is LVT actually a kind of vinyl?
Yes. Luxury vinyl tile is part of the vinyl flooring family. The practical comparison is its individual plank or tile format against a continuous sheet, together with the selected fixing method.
Does vinyl plank always mean glue-down LVT?
No. A plank description identifies the shape, not necessarily the fixing method. Check whether the named range is glue-down or click construction before comparing installation requirements.
Is a wood-effect sheet made from separate boards?
No. Its board pattern is printed on a continuous sheet. LVT planks are individual pieces, even when their colour resembles the sheet sample.
Where can I compare the two formats for a bathroom?
Our sheet vinyl versus LVT guide covers the room-based trade-offs, while the bathroom flooring service explains fitting around sanitary ware and finishing the perimeter.
