SPC flooring installation
SPC flooring is a rigid-core floor covering often encountered in click-fit plank and tile formats. Choosing the surface is only one part of the decision: the joining system, supporting floor and perimeter details also shape the installation. Our free site visit provides an opportunity to discuss the chosen product and the work required before a written quote is prepared.
Read the product specification, not just the label

SPC and rigid core are useful buying terms, but they do not replace the instructions supplied with a particular floor. Identify the exact range and format before ordering. A click connection, an attached backing and an optional underlay each have implications for the fit. The manufacturer’s guidance should establish which layers belong beneath the chosen product.
Compare samples with the room’s furniture and lighting, then look beyond the decorative surface. Plank dimensions affect how the floor reads through a doorway, while the selected format influences cuts around the room. Keep the product information alongside the sample so the appearance and installation requirements can be considered as one choice.
Give a click floor an appropriate supporting surface
A rigid board does not remove the need to check the base. Uneven areas, loose boards and changes in floor level should be assessed before laying begins. The required flatness comes from the product instructions, rather than an assumption that a thicker plank can cover any defect. Preparation is decided from the condition of the actual floor.
Concrete and timber raise different questions. Moisture readings, old adhesive and the stability of the surface may affect the preparation. Where smoothing or an overlay is needed, the resulting height must be included in the plan. Check doors and the join with neighbouring coverings before selecting a threshold or arranging the final fitting sequence.
Plan a floating floor around fixed features
For a click-fit SPC installation, the perimeter and any interruptions in the layout need planning in accordance with the selected system. Door frames, columns and fixed units can affect the route through the room. Check the instructions before assuming that boards should run continuously everywhere or that the same detail suits every doorway.
Consider the view along the floor as well as the first row. A planned starting line helps balance the cuts on opposite sides, while the pattern through connected spaces should look deliberate. Discuss narrow passages and irregular walls at the survey so the installation is organised around the whole layout rather than the easiest edge to start from.
Separate SPC from glue-down luxury vinyl
Click-fit rigid core and glue-down LVT are different installation approaches. A floating click floor is joined as a system; glue-down LVT is bonded to the prepared base. Choosing between them involves the specific product, the room and the desired finish at its boundaries. Neither method should be selected solely because it sounds quicker.
Our glue-down LVT page explains the bonded alternative, including preparation for thin planks and tiles. Use that comparison to decide which questions to bring to a survey, rather than treating every vinyl product as interchangeable. If you have bought SPC flooring, keep the packaging details and instructions available so the proposed installation can be matched to it.
Set out the work before booking fitting
The quotation should make clear which product will be installed, what happens to the old covering and whether the base needs preparation. Agree the underlay or backing arrangement, perimeter finish and doorway transitions. Furniture, access and the order of connected rooms also need attention so fitting day starts with practical arrangements in place.
The manufacturer’s guidance governs preparation of the material and its use after fitting. Keep the care information for the selected floor and discuss any requirements for furniture or fixed equipment. A free site visit helps turn a pack of flooring into a considered installation plan, with the chosen finish, supporting base and room details addressed together.
SPC flooring installation questions
Does SPC flooring always need a separate underlay?
No single underlay rule applies to every SPC product. Some products include a backing, and the fitting instructions determine whether any separate layer is permitted or required. Check the exact range before buying underlay.
Will a rigid-core board hide an uneven subfloor?
The base must meet the selected product’s requirements. Unevenness and movement need assessing before fitting; board rigidity should not be used as a substitute for checking and preparing the supporting surface.
What changes the time needed for SPC fitting?
Room shape, connected spaces, furniture, uplift and base preparation affect the sequence. Product instructions may also require preparation before installation. The arrangements for your rooms are discussed after the survey.
How should I compare SPC installation quotes?
Compare the same product and scope, including preparation, backing or underlay, edge trims, thresholds and old-floor removal. A material-only figure does not describe the whole installation.
