Runners for stairs and hallways

Stair runner fitting across South East London and Kent

A stair runner leaves a border of finished wood showing on each side of the flight, giving grip and softness where people actually walk. We supply and fit runners with fresh underlay and gripper, the old carpet lifted and taken away, and every staircase quoted in writing after a free site visit.

What a runner is, and when it suits a staircase

A runner is a narrower strip of carpet laid down the centre of the flight rather than wall to wall. It suits period hallways and anyone who likes the look of their staircase but wants a quieter, softer route underfoot. A full stair carpet covers each tread and riser from side to side; the choice between the two is part of the survey conversation.

Are stair runners a good idea? For most busy hallways, yes. They protect the part of the tread that takes the wear, soften the sound of the stairs and let the timber on either side stay on show. Where the boards are tired or patched, a full stair carpet may be the better answer, and we will say so at the visit.

Waterfall or cap and band

A runner can fall straight from the nose of each tread to the next, known as waterfall, or be pulled tight around the nosing and into the riser, known as cap and band. The first is softer and quicker; the second follows the step exactly and suits a crisp, tailored hallway.

Decorative rods look excellent on a period flight, but they should not be the only thing holding the runner down, otherwise it shifts and wears unevenly. We fix the runner properly underneath and treat rods as the finishing touch.

How we fit a runner

First the old carpet, gripper rods and underlay are lifted and removed. Treads are checked, and loose boards are screwed down and nail heads punched below the surface so nothing squeaks or shows through later. New gripper goes along each tread and riser, and fresh underlay is cut to every step.

The runner is then set out so it runs true down the flight, because a strip that is slightly off centre is visible from the front door. On a staircase with winders each turn is cut separately, and the landing edge is finished so the pile meets the top nosing cleanly.

Choosing the carpet and the edging

Stairs wear faster than any room because every foot lands on the same edge, so where the stairs are the busiest part of the house we suggest a heavy-domestic twist. Ranges we regularly supply include Cormar, Brockway, Westex and Penthouse, and we bring samples to the site visit so the colour is judged in your own hallway light.

Loops can look smart on a runner, though pets with claws are worth mentioning at the survey. The edges of a runner need a neat finish, and the width is chosen so an even margin of tread shows on both sides. Our stair runner fitting guide covers widths, bindings and rods in more detail.

What a stair runner costs

Our pricing page lists a guide for a hallway, stairs and landing in carpet of £480 - £780 on average, supplied and fitted. Where your flight sits in that range depends on the carpet chosen, the number of winders and whether you want a runner, binding or rods.

The site visit is free, and the written quote that follows includes uplift and disposal of the old carpet, gripper and underlay, furniture moved and replaced, door bars and clean-up. Call us or send the form to arrange a visit.

FAQs

Stair runner questions

Do you supply the runner as well as fit it?

Yes. We supply the carpet as well as fitting it, so one team handles both. Ranges we commonly fit include Cormar, Brockway, Westex and Penthouse, and samples come to the free site visit.

Are stair runners a good idea on a busy staircase?

Usually, yes. A runner protects the centre of the treads where the wear lands and softens noise, while leaving the edges of the staircase on show. A heavy-domestic twist holds up best on the nosings.

Do stair rods hold the runner in place?

No. Rods are decorative. The runner is fixed properly underneath with gripper and underlay, and rods are added as a finishing touch if you want them.

Can you fit a runner over existing stair boards?

Yes, a runner goes onto bare, sound treads. Any existing carpet and gripper come up first, the treads are checked and any squeaks fixed, then the runner is set out and fitted.

Can the landing be done at the same time?

Yes, and it often looks better. Carrying one carpet from the stairs onto the landing avoids a join at the top step, and our pricing page shows a hallway, stairs and landing guide figure for that combination.
