It should not be presented as a price for every staircase on its own, or divided into an invented charge per step. The scope of the proposed work has to remain clear.
If you only want the flight replaced, say so when enquiring. If the hall and landing are changing too, explain where the carpet will stop and which neighbouring coverings are staying. The quote can then describe the actual project, rather than treating a room-guide figure as a complete price without checking how much floor is involved.
Full stair carpet and a runner are different choices
A full stair carpet covers each tread and riser across the flight. A runner leaves an exposed timber margin at each side.
